Being a lover of all things Christmas and all things boy band, I was bound to pay attention when ace pop group Canary Swing's take on the Slade classic Merry Christmas Everyone was recommended to me. Now I don't know much about the 4 lads that make up the band (George, Cory, Ben and Brad) but based on their reconstruction of this holiday favourite I can confirm that they indeed have a knack for putting their own spin on old standards that is both inventive and engaging. Also helps that they have this effortlessly likeable singing style and performance presence with the vocals and instrument ability to back it up. Here, they've teamed up with equally gifted singer Andy Samuels to raise funds for Acorn Overseas charity which you should absolutely take the time to find out about by clicking the link above - then buy the single because it is the season for giving after all. They've taken the brash exuberance of the Slade original and turned it into a sweetly harmonised, beautifully sung acoustic mid-tempo singalong infused with elements of pop and rock, permeated with good time vibes. It loses none of the magic of the original and is actually quite the clever remake, heavy on charm and an opportunity to seek out the nuanced sincerity of the lyrics to match the cause they are raising funds for. The lads are in fine vocal fettle and Andy is an excellent addition to the team, making it feel like a convivial singalong with your much-better-singer-than-you mates that the listener can get involved in. Their personalities shine - particularly in the engrossing video (see here) which will have you smiling from ear to ear in no time. It all adds a little sparkle to the season while reminding us that during these jolly times there are those that need a little more help to have the same privileges we take for granted. As a reinvention of a song, Canary Swing have pitched Merry Christmas Everyone just perfectly while as an introduction to the band it's left me entirely smitten. More please boys.
