Train - Merry Christmas Everyone
48 DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS!!
Pre-order Christmas in Tahoe here (Amazon UK)
Hey soul sister - you'll be jolly excited to learn that you have been personally invited to spend Christmas in Tahoe with ace pop-rock group Train so grab your dancing shoes because this promises to be one heck of a party. And remember - what happens under the mistletoe stays under the mistletoe :) Yup, indeed Train are releasing a full Christmas album to shake up Christmas and it's all preceded by their own rather inspired take on the festive classic Merry Christmas Everyone. It's a fairly faithful cover in terms of the instrumental although the piano seems a little jauntier and the guitars give more of a frisson of energy than I recall in the original. What works really well is that the song seems to be a journey from cynicism to acceptance of the season. The early parts of the song (in particular the first verse) seems to be delivered with a sneering distaste for the season as if someone broke lead singer Pat Monahan's heart at this special time of year and he's wondering how they just live with themselves day to day. But there's magic in them there lyrics and it's enough to bring out the giddy glee in the most Scrooge like of people and soon it's a kick-up-your-heels raucous celebration of the big day that just embraces everything about it with an enthusiastic ebullience that is contagious. Perhaps the message is don't dwell on the reflective and bittersweet - let the holidays make you laugh, smile and be happy. Train accomplish that with Merry Christmas Everyone - and the hoot of a video is the icing on this very delicious Stollen cake.
