Whilst amazing pop-operatic trio, Blake, may be masterful narrators of all songs stage and screen, they are also most eloquent melodic raconteurs of the Christmas season. They evidenced this last year on their stirring seasonal album, Classic Christmas (review above), and it continues to be the gift that keeps on giving 12 months later - thanks to their evocative new single Back In Your Arms (For Christmas). Amidst an album full of highlights, this glorious composition always stood as out as a much needed message of hope and optimism in a world that can often feel bleary and bleak. These melancholy feelings are often heightened during the Yuletide period so Blake give us mellifluous majesty and much needed succor on this song by focusing on the things we can achieve - focusing on the wishes we can make come true and being with the ones we love at the most wonderful time of the year. Set to elegiac piano and a delicately warming guitar, Back In Your Arms (For Christmas) sees Blake demonstrate that their expressive voices are just as powerful when they deliver this quiet, dignified message with grace and stately elegance. The trio are well known for letting their voices crescendo to the gods above when the song requires it, but here they understand that beautifully woven harmonies, an indelible melody and the pensive lyrics are all that are needed to make this song resonant long after the season has concluded for another year. It is beautifully done with the guys imbuing their vocals with wistful reminiscing that artfully balances with the sense of anticipation and longing of the titular wish. It is also a testament to how solid song craftsmanship will always endure past the trends and fading fads that temporarily dominate the charts - and this Christmas song is the most exquisite example of how to achieve this. Ah Blake - long may your seasonal songs become the soundtrack to each Christmas adventure we take through this life.
