Lord & Lady - Somewhere In My Memory

22 DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS!!

Buy Lord & Lady Christmas songs here (Bandcamp)

I rarely click on the "recommended for you" button of Spotify but I'm certainly glad my twitchy trigger finger took me there this morning. In search of new seasonal songs, Spotify uncovered for me some gems from last year - and great Christmas music is for life, to be discovered and played year after year (not just for the holiday year it is released in). Enter Lord and Lady - or Scott and Rachel as their family and friends probably call them (though quite honestly, I think I would insist on Lord. Or Lady. I'm not picky). This acoustic singer-songwriting duo have built up quite a name for themselves thanks to their insightful cover versions and their own sparkling creations. While I have a whole back catalogue to immerse myself into, what initially caught my attention was a trio of Christmas movie songs they recorded last year. Each captures the magic and emotion of the movie and swathes the melody with elegant instrumental and shimmering vocals. Do check out the bandcamp link above for some radiant artwork for each single from Adam Griffin...
  • Somewhere In My Memory (from Home Alone 2) ~ while the music featured in the first two Home Alone films, it was the soundtrack to the second which added lyrics (and was beautifully performed by Bette Midler). Here, there is a delightfully graceful string accompaniment with a delicate piano gently adding to the music box sophistication of the score. Scott and Rachel deliver hushed vocals that genuinely bring to life the wonder of the lyrics - the intertwined harmonies of the chorus a real treat. The instrumental bridge and aching sentiment of the closing verse brings such tangible feelings it is as if a movie of your own recollections is playing right in front of you. Now that's magic.
  • Trim Up The Tree (from How The Grinch Stole Christmas) ~ from solemn and reverent to the playful and gleeful. Lord and Lady bring finger clicking, shoulder shimmying fun to the masses with this vivid take on the Dr Seuss classic. In just 90 seconds they imbue the music with enough festive cheer to power Santa's sleigh for all of Christmas Eve. It is an utterly contagious romp with chiming bells and a subtle infusion of string, dancing joyously along the charming vocals. You'll soon be fuzzle fuzzing and whuzzle whuzzing to your heart's content as you make your tree all sorts of sparkle jolly twinkle jingly.
  • Buffalo Gals (from It's A Wonderful Life) ~ I love a song that is so indelibly associated with Christmas yet isn't actually seasonal so you can get away with playing it all the live long year. Buffalo Gals is just such a song, from the iconic movie It's A Wonderful Life. Scott has seamlessly added new lyrics which add to the dreamy sense of romance to this enchanting new take. The peppy pace is as exhilarating as any sleigh ride, the luscious vocals as sparkling as the lassoed moon in the sky. It lifts your spirits and makes you want to grab the one you love & twirl and prance to your heart's delight. I'm utterly smitten.
