I love an early release of a Christmas single. It is not only something new to satiate fans, but gives Christmas music nuts like me 9-10 weeks to enjoy the song before packing it away with the decorations for another 11 months. It also serves as an opportunity for the song to find an audience - initially, no doubt, the vociferous fan base, but then it expands to savvy pop pundits as they get into the season. So it is smart for Ava Max to release her festive offering for 2020 a full 10 weeks before the big day. She's flying high from releasing one of the year's best pop albums (Heaven & Hell) and this song, Christmas Without You, fits nicely alongside that pop music odyssey. From the first keyboard chords, Ava sets the scene of love and longing that often feels so much more pronounced at the most wonderful time of the year. The first verse and chorus are a piano-vocal duet with a mere shimmering of bells, letting Ava's mellifluous voice guide her plea for her loved ones to be with her.
