Well this is rather delightful. Splendid country music trio, Runaway June, have compiled an EP of seasonal songs to shine a light onto the final months of a gloomy 2020. When I Think About Christmas is a mix of beloved classics and new songs destined to become your future favourite festive oldies. What is charming about the EP is that it not only displays their lovely, textured trademark harmonies to their fullest extent, but crafts a vivid picture of wintry mountains, log cabins and snowy landscapes. This is achieved through inventive use of instruments and lush production that gives the music an earthy, organic feel. Add in the nuanced emotion and excitement in their voices and its a ho-ho-hoedown of a collection that makes you glad from head to (mistle)toe...
The EP opens with a sprightly original, Christmas On The Radio. Finger-click rhythms bounce alongside a playful fiddle with just a smattering of jingling bells - all accentuating the narrative about the joy of immersing yourself into the holiday spirit. The pre-chorus builds a sense of anticipation that it is rewarded with that ace chorus; a sing-along gift that feels like it has always been on your playlist. Here we go! The exhilaration continues with Sleigh Ride, where the harmonies are drenched in sixties girl-group vibes as glittering as tinsel wrapped around the tree. It makes it feel like this joyful interpretation has traversed the passages of time to be discovered by the Runaway June ladies. It gives you a happy feeling nothing in the world can buy...
O Holy Night is one of my favourite Christmas traditional songs so I'm always rather protective of it. This version is gorgeous; reverent and respectful with intricately layered voices that give weight to the awe of the lyrics they sing. The Appalachian sound makes it seem timeless and as crystal clear as the night divine. Once you've recovered from the majesty of the final night, it is for When I Think About Christmas; an old school country music style classic that reminds that being with the one you love at Christmas is a present well worth unwrapping. Cooing harmonies as an essential as the lead vocal, whilst that flirtatious piano is a sumptuous delight. It all ends with Let It Snow, a final romp where every note is savoured. And that's what you should do with this EP - savour it, play it annually and tell everyone you've met about it.
