ONE MONTH UNTIL CHRISTMAS!!
Hallmark movies really are the heart of Christmas - I'll never tire of the seasonal spirit they bring year upon year. Some of my favourite movies from the channel's holiday line up star Alicia Witt, who is no slouch in the singing department either. Two years after she gave us her Christmas Miracle (see Ghosts of Christmas Past below), I'm ready for more and am returning to Christmas Tree Lane to get an insight into why Christmas Will Never End. It is a beautiful piano-vocal duet with aching lyrics about the redemptive power of love (and how it feels even more of a gift at the time of year when emotions are heightened). Alicia has always been an expressive vocalist and she is fuelled by wishful longing, channelling these sentiments in every nuanced word she sings. It is almost like a music box lullaby, a dream like ballad that helps soothe the noise of the world outside and focus you on the heart warming lyrics and serene melody. A second song, Why Christmas, also features in the movie. Written before the current pandemic it is both a timeless and timely ode to recognising what is important during the holidays and celebrating the blessings you have. With resonant chords and elegant guitar, this reminds me of the lovely Christmas songs Karen Carpenter would sing - swelling into a glorious crescendo which sends your spirits soaring higher than the brightest star in the heavens. Just charming.
