27 DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS!!
Stream The Spirit of Christmas here (Spotify)
Writing about festive music for 60 days of the year, every year, takes me to as many weird and wonderful places as it does magical and miraculous musical locations. In the end, they are all powered by the title of today's pick - The Spirit of Christmas. And while I've always appreciated Darlene Love's contribution to the season (Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) and All Alone on Christmas), I didn't think I'd be writing about Kurt Russell's new holiday single! However, thanks to the rather rousing new franchise on Netflix, The Christmas Chronicles (which returns this year for its second thrilling adventure) we get what we British would call "a knees up" of a Christmas single that will make you glad from head to (mistle)toe. The Spirit of Christmas is a rousing, rock'n'roll infused sing-along anthem with an addictive theatricality to it that is all but impossible to resist. Jingling bells, effusive percussion and electrifying guitar give it all a frisson of excitement that is matched by the ebullient vocals from Mr Russell and Ms Love. It is like a brilliant melange of songs like Hakuna Matata, Shake A Tail Feather and Darlene's own Christmas songs, yet never feels derivative or dated. It is just a feel good romp that lets you leave the worries of the world at the opening notes and shimmy like it is Christmas Eve. Magnificent!
