Last Christmas, Mabel gave us her heart via the lilting melancholia of the still-exquisite The Loneliest Time Of The Year. It was a melodic reminder that Christmas isn't all jingle bells and cinnamon swirls for everyone - and her message is even more timely with the lockdown Christmas of 2020. She balances this out, however, with a new track to accompany the re-release of that song; the determined hope of I'll Be Home For Christmas. Set to a finger click groove and elegiac guitar accompaniment, Mabel sings the lyrics with a wistful yearning that encapsulate the wishes of those separated from their families this year. With jingling bells and her own interpretation of the melody, it feels both timely and timeless. The key change at around the 2m mark is phenomenal - as if she is drawing strength from the words she sings and believing her titular promise may actually be possible. It is a joyful and triumphant moment in a song that is beautifully produced and sung with such nuanced emotion it is as if she is singing our own feelings. If Mabel wants to release a Christmas song every year of this calibre, I'd be A-OK with that...
