Announcing one additional Christmas Present with an advertisement in his local Stoke-on-Trent newspaper was a rather Robbie Williams way of premiering a brand new seasonal single. Can't Stop Christmas is the follow up to this monolithic 2019 album, The Christmas Present (which, in deluxe version, clocked in at a whopping yet glorious 28 tracks) and is a timely, if somewhat cheeky, reflection of how things have changed in the past 12 months. With wry lyrics (all about a socially distanced Santa and an abundance of Zoom calls) and a chant-along chorus, this is exactly what you would imagine a 2020 Christmas single from Robbie Williams would sound like. It is what my old mam would call "a bobby dazzler of a song". With jingling percussion, chiming bells and a children's choir, it is a sumptuous feast of a song with a message Old Saint Nick would approve of. Ultimately it is a message of how the magic of Christmas lives on despite what rages on around us - and, hopefully, next year this will be a nostalgic look back at what we triumphed over as we all party with Bad Sharon from the office...
