I love a powerful Christmas ballad, fuelled by sentiment for the season yet recognising some of the sadness that is inherent with the festivities. Victor Crone's shimmering new single, These Days (Longing For Christmas) is an exquisite example of this. It reminds me a little of Roxette's It Must Have Been Love; the type of sweeping production that used to regularly top the charts around the world. Victor co-wrote the single and you can tell it comes from a personal place. The opening verses have stripped back instrumental - just Victor's aching vocal and piano with an infusion of graceful strings, flowing in like the first fall of snow. The music crescendos as Victor explores how to let go of the bad times and focus on the good - something we could all do with after the global pandemic of 2020. A buoyant wall of sound cascades round that sing-along chorus and works in partnership with Victor's voice, drawing strength from each other to climax in a rousing finale that can't help but bring a smile to your face. If you need a song to help you believe again then this might just be it. Play loud, play often and tell everyone you've ever met about it.
