3 WEEKS UNTIL CHRISTMAS!!
Buy the soundtrack to Mariah's Magical Christmas Special here (Apple Music)
Mariah Carey is now so indelibly Christmas that she may well be in the running to become the first female Santa Claus when the position becomes vacant in 2024. As I type this, the greatest Christmas single of the past 30 years, All I Want For Christmas Is You, sits at number 2 (again) on the UK singles chart and is likely to **finally** hit the festive number one spot 26 years after its original release. Her 2020 contribution to the festivities comes via Mariah Carey's Magical Christmas Special, a title for a TV hour (and accompanying soundtrack) that is so apt it requires no introduction. A visual run through of her greatest seasonal hits, with delightful visuals and sparkling guest stars, the show includes all the jovial happy songs as well as those mellow fireside moments. There is also one, brand new recording in there as well as some remakes of her own holiday compositions with some of those celebrity friends she had pop by. Guaranteed to make you feel joyful and triumphant, Mariah Carey really is the Christmas gift who keeps on giving...
- Sleigh Ride ~ hurrah! Ms Carey finally gets around to recording her own version of the 1940s classic and it is everything you dreamed it would be. You actually believe that horses would whinny in delight and clop their hooves in time to her exhilarating journey. Frisky piano and Fontane Sisters style harmonies dance alongside Mariah's gleeful performance. The thing about Mariah and Christmas is that you can tell she's having such a great time that the feeling is contagious. Throw in some legendary whistle and the sight of her flying through the skies in a self-drive sleigh and this will give you enough happy to power you through to new year.
- Oh Santa (ft Ariana Grande & Jennifer Hudson) ~ Mariah's Merry Christmas II You is a decade old this year and, like a fine mulled wine, this song only gets better with age. Like a modern day Supremes, Mariah brings along the legendary pipes of Ariana and Jennifer to send this Christmas Cheerleader song soaring to the skies above. The solo moments are a joy to behold but the harmonies are surely sent by Saint Nick himself. Oh - and that dual-high-pitch whistle between Ariana and Mariah is a giddy thrill. Might be the best diva off since Whitney turned up to sing When You Believe...
- Here Comes Santa Claus (ft Snoop Dogg & Jermaine Dupri) ~ this funky fun rendition has always been a treat so you can see why it would inspire the elves to finishing wrapping those 80,000 bears. When Snoop and Jermaine show up to get their groove on and have Snoop deliver his Christmas sermon, you can't help but gather round and get your low-down shimmy on. Together, they all give it some club bounce to that monolithic beat. It is just what you need when you are done with work for the season and want to get the libations flowing - even if it is A Very Zoom Christmas this year.
