It has taken over 30 years for teen pop star turned bonafide music icon Tiffany to release an original Christmas song. Angels was definitely worth the wait. The plaintive ballad has a stripped back (but no less effective) instrumental that lets Tiffany's voice shine forth, powering the pretty melody and poignant words with her expressive singing. The lyrics recognise the adversity that people have faced in 2020 and that is equally represented by the elegiac piano that accompanies Tiffany; yet the singer encourages us to find hope and salvation in the simplest of places, meaning the titular Christmas angel becomes a metaphor for whatever brings the listener soothing relief. Perhaps Angels is that salvation - when the elegant strings sweep in, it is like a glimmer of light in the darkness and you start to believe that maybe, just maybe, 2021 will be the brighter future we are waiting for. Just lovely.
