When is a Christmas single not really a Christmas single? When a pop star follows the now tradition of re-recording a classic pop hit for a brand's festive commercial. In this case it is Mabel who has recorded Cyndi Lauper's aching song, Time After Time for the rather charming McDonalds commercial. Mabel has certainly earned her Christmas credentials over the last few years with her original song, Loneliest Time Of The Year and an evocative cover of I'll Be Home For Christmas. Her take on Time After Time may not be as seasonally obvious as those songs but does mean you can play it well into the new year. A charming yet elegiac piano accompaniment cascades like delicately falling snow, swathing Mabel's voice in a pretty, music box style melody. It's particularly effective when the piano drops a scale, adding a melancholy poignancy to the song. A shimmer of glimmering strings swoop in which add a graceful elegance to the plaintive plea - it is a message that resonates for the holidays but a beautiful rendition that will lift your spirits whatever time of year you choose to play it.
