I have absolutely been known to embrace a Hallowe'en anthem on myfestivepop, particularly if that song comes from someone as immersed in the holiday season which follows as much as I am. Spencer's A Very Spencer Christmas album remains a staple of my holiday playlists, as does his rather delightful take on the Bette Midler classic, Somewhere In My Memory. He's always appreciated the spookier side of things so there is no harm in getting on down to his brand new haunting of a single, Stranger Things. No doubt inspired by the hit TV show of the same name on Netflix, this is a gloriously swirling sophisticated slice of synth pop. A pulsing beat and throbbing undercurrent of bass gives the musical score a frisson of danger whilst the mystical female backing vocal adds to the chilling production. Spencer sings of the eerie, ghostly happenings in the world around us and how it changes our perceptions of the impossible when we start to believe in the supernatural. It all coalesces to make for a compelling listen - don't be surprised if you have a shiver down your spine by the time it reaches its thrilling conclusion.
