For four of the last five years I've been able to write about new holiday music from Ingrid Michaelson. Her lush Christmas album, Songs For The Season, has become one of my favourite festive sets in recent years - not least because of the magic and sparkle behind each track but because it has become an indelible part of my holidays each year, the soundtrack to memories past and present. For me, a Christmas album is for life, not just the year it is released - and Ms Michaelson has really been able to capitalise on this (and not just with her annual holiday show) through new tracks and glittering duets. This year, she has teamed up with A Great Big World (who aren't strangers to embracing the melodic inspiration that the most wonderful time of the year brings - see here). Their joint new single, It's Almost Christmas, is an utterly charming addition to your seasonal Spotify playlist...

It's Almost Christmas is a gorgeous ballad that builds and crescendos as it builds towards its radiant finale. It is a wondrous, poetic description of all the wonders that the season holds as seen through the eyes of those who truly seek out the enchanting spell Christmas casts. It starts with glorious piano accompaniment and a lovely sincere vocal from the A Great Big World lads who delight in the story they are unfurling. Sweeping strings usher in Ingrid's solo moments which are equally as charming. She's an enraptured chanteuse whose mellifluous insights are so vivid you feel you can reach out and touch. What is so powerful is how this is delivered - there are no dramatic bursts of sound, rather it is the honesty in each note that makes it have such an impact. In fact, a moment where the music fades away and Ingrid drinks it all in is just as stunning as any belted to the rafter singing. Beautiful.
