Lindsay Lohan/Chord Overstreet - Falling For Christmas (OST)

There is a rather charming new movie, Falling For Christmas, playing now on Netflix. This romantic comedy sees the two leads, Lindsay Lohan and Chord Overstreet, give good old-fashioned MGM movie magic from the 50s in a deliciously contemporary setting. Great physical comedy moments, witty asides and genuine emotion permeate the story which, of course, hurtles towards a rather uplifting finale. Great work from husband-wife production/director team Michael and Janeen Damian in giving the movie enough originality to make it one I will revisit year after year. There is also a great soundtrack of songs available, some which feature on the streaming soundtrack (the first three songs below) as well as some other glorious tracks which are in the movie. Well worth you tracking them down...
  • Lindsay Lohan ~ Jingle Bell Rock: great choice of song that Lindsay and the mean girls performed in that classic movie nearly 20 years ago. It is far more textured version than the Mean Girls track, with a sumptuous wall of festive sound that swathes Lindsay's voice in a vibrant score of beats and bells. Lindsay sounds in her absolute element, particularly on giddy moments like the "jing, jing, jingle bell rock" riff that starts the 2nd verse. Backing vocals in perfect harmony make it feel like a convivial affair while the guest rap from Ali Tomineek brings it bang up to date. Addictive as an egg nog latte from Starbucks...
  • Chord Overstreet ~ Everybody Loves Christmas: if Sierra Belmont gets her own song then Glee alum Chord as Jake Russell deserves his moment in the spotlight. He gets that on the rollicking Everybody Loves Christmas. A music box introduction lulls you temporarily before the song breaks into an effusive, percussion driven pep-fest where Chord enthusiastically sings of all the joyful things that herald the most wonderful time of the year. The song's rhythmic groove is like being on a sleigh ride where you drink in the sights you hear in the lyrics with Chord as the most infectious narrator of your journey.
  • Aliana Lohan ~ Jingle Bells: its a family affair as younger sister, Aliana, brings her own take on Jingle Bells to the soundtrack. It is a big band, theatrical instrumental where Aliana is giving jazzy chanteuse vibes. Brassy horns swirl like tinsel round the tree and piano tinkles like snowflakes on the breeze - this crafts a more sensuous aura than you might be expected it and Aliana leans into this with a more seductive vocal. The mid-tempo pace means that every nuanced note lands exactly as it should with the instrumental telling the story that the sing-along words don't reveal. It was my first exposure to Aliana and it was more than compelling enough that I wanted more...
  • Aliana Lohan ~ Without You: not a Christmas song but Aliana's single, Without You, fits to a part of the movie perfectly. It is a haunting, beautiful song all about the redemptive power of love and how it can heal even the most broken person. I think the theme of the words aligns to the hope and optimism that the season can bring whilst the music has a simmering, wintry atmosphere to it. Aliana pitches the vox with graceful elegance - she doesn't need to belt the song to the rafters, she just imbues each word with emotion. You can stream the song here on Spotify. 
  • Michael Damian - Must Be Christmas: my very first exposure to Michael Damian was not via the Young and the Restless, but rather finding his seasonal single, Christmas Time Without You, on a family holiday from my native Britain to California in the winter of 1987. Must Be Christmas only appears in the movie and, as yet, is unavailable anywhere else. This is a real shame as it is a great reminder of what an expressive vocalist Michael is; he has a great discography of music from the 80s and 90s (plus a family Christmas album from 2003) that still reside in my collection and this lovely, uplifting number deserves to shine like the brightest star.
