PG Roxette - Wish You The Best For Xmas


ONE MONTH UNTIL CHRISTMAS!!


Well isn't this rather lovely? Following on from his excellent Pop Up Dynamo album just a month ago, Per Gessle continues the Roxette legacy via PG Roxette and two sparkling new Christmas songs. It must have been love that powered both these songs into existence, yet it is no Christmas for the broken hearted as, in their own ways, they celebrate the glow and happiness that the season brings to so many. Per's compositions are clearly influenced by his love of evergreen festive songs by the likes of Slade and Wizzard because Wish You The Best For Xmas is as peppy as a sleigh ride. A giddy hand clap beat and buoyant keyboard riffs disguises an element of sadness in the lyrics (a fractured relationship) but Per's engaging vocal style gives you a sense that he genuinely means the good vibes he is sending to his ex-paramour. It becomes a Yuletide romp that helps you shrug off the woes of the world and lean into the bon vivance that seems much more prevalent at the most wonderful time of the year.

Flip the vinyl over (for, naturally, these two tracks ARE available as a double A side vinyl single) and you will discover a rather lovely ballad, Wishing On The Same Christmas Star. Apparently written for a musical that never happened (someone revive this idea for the West End tout de suite please), Per is joined by exquisite vocalist Helena Josefsson to bring the song to life. There is a Disney-esque vibe to it and you can see how it would captivate audiences at a pivotal moment in a musical - two love-lorn souls coming together under the vast night sky. Finding a little companionship and tenderness in the world seems like a must; this is just the song to get you glittering as brightly as the lights on your tree. In a way, it is a far happier sequel to the original It Must've Been Love, a song of hope and devotion that is both joyful and triumphant. My suggestion - play both on a loop and then tell everyone you've ever met about them.
