Country music doesn't always get the air-time it deserves in my native Britain so I always make an effort to seek out some of the gems that are heating up the US country radio airwaves. Combine my appreciation of that genre with my love of Christmas music and, of course, I was smitten the moment I discovered powerhouses Phil Vassar and Deana Carter teaming up on a couple of brand new holiday songs. The first, Coming Home for Christmas, is a vibrant seasonal romp that acknowledges the stresses that life can bring but celebrates the comfort and familiarity that going home and being with loved ones (whoever they may be) can bring. A peppy sleigh ride of a percussive beat propel hammond organ and effusive guitar, a winter wonderland of sound that swathes Phil and Deana's sincere vocals. They sing with such gleeful hope that it is an entirely contagious sentiment you'll be singing right through until New Year's Day. References to classic movies, jingling bells and the gift of these two amazing singers duetting is the icing on this already delicious cake.
Fast forward to December 31st and it is naturally time to contemplate all that has been whilst anticipating what may lay ahead. Brand New Year is just the soundtrack to bring mellifluous bliss to those moments. This romantic, dreamy duet is drenched in lush piano and sweeping strings - a Hallmark holiday movie just waiting to happen. Extended instrumental moments really let the emotion of the music breathe whilst, naturally, Phil and Deana beautifully convey the feelings of hope and cheer in every nuanced note they sing. Serene enough to make the crazy of the world stop and shimmering enough for the most jaded of listener to find the happy in their lives. Even if the happy is the magic of listening to this enchanting Disney-esque song. Guaranteed to make you feel glad from head to mistletoe...
