I'm rather fond of this new(ish) trend to make a Christmas album last beyond the year it is released - commercially speaking, that is. A good Christmas album should embed itself in the memories of people listening to it so they revisit the songs year after year; however, that isn't to say artists should maximise the sales of a project and many now do so with extra songs added for a deluxe edition a year later. Steve Perry has added two new songs to the digital release of his The Season song - one lush original and a gorgeous cover of This Christmas. Both are dedicated to his friend Lamont Dozier who sadly passed away earlier this year. Tis the season to revisit an expanded The Season (and marvel still at that glorious cover art)...
  • Maybe This Year ~ I always think it must be super hard to write a new Christmas song with so many out there; Steve has done an exquisite job - a lilting piano-vocal introduction setting the scene with hopeful lyrics and a jazzy tinge to the production. A subtle percussion shuffles in, like gentle winds blowing over the freshly lain snow; meanwhile, elegant strings swathe the longing in his expressive, nuanced vocal delivery. Beautifully done - a quiet reflection that just invites the listener in to feel the emotions right alongside him.
  • This Christmas ~ a gentle, engaging arrangement unveils the quieter, romantic/convivial moments of the song (often, it is the exuberance of the season). Steve really excels in this stripped back arrangements, letting each word linger as he savours the joy of singing these songs. I particularly like that the new songs are at the start of the deluxe edition, meaning long time listeners get something fresh and exciting straight away. Perfect listening when you want the crazy of Christmas to slip away into something more relaxing.
