I don't know about you, but it feels the right time to have a spotlight back on the John Lennon-Yoko Ono classic, Happy Xmas (War is Over). It was written initially and released as a protest song against the Vietnam War but over the years has become a holiday standard (yet feeling ever poignant and relevant when we find ourselves in times of conflict all over again). This year, rather splendid (p)operatic vocal trio, Il Volo, have breathed new life into the song by starting with a fairly traditional take on the music. What is so compelling about it is how they use the swell of the bombastic instrumental to send their powerful voices soaring - that way the hopeful words become more than melodic wishes on the wind; they transform into a powerful, mellifluous yen for change. And, of course, there's no denying the lads can sing - but they do more than that here. They perform every word and infuse it with sincere sentiment and heartfelt feeling. Makes you feel anything is possible - even peace, someday at Christmas.
