Cody Belew - Christmas For One

43 DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS!!

I fell and fell hard for Cody Belew when I first became aware of him via 2020's Christmas single, Hang Your Hat On My Tree (and the 2021 festive remix by Dave Aude). I've followed his music ever since (Neon Moon being a particularly potent banger) and am rather pleased that he has returned to the most wonderful time of the year with a brand new holiday concoction called Christmas For One. Whereas Hang Your Hat was full of seductive mistle-tones, Christmas For One leans hard into the loneliness and sorrow of the season. It is a tender, aching ballad that gradually builds, both with the texture of the score and the passion of the vocal into a gorgeously poignant wall of sound. Emotions, both happy and sad, are heightened during the Yuletide month and Cody conveys that with a mellifluous melancholy. Layered vocals make this a hymn like odyssey that reaches out to anyone affected by the words. It is beautifully put together - a mesmerising study in yearning soliloquy. He sings not to make things better but because it is too painful not to voice these inner sentiments. Brutal yet brilliant.
