11 years ago, on this very day, I was writing about Pixie Lott's inaugural Christmas song, I Got Love For Christmas - and she's still feeling that holiday spirit on her next festive foray. First Christmas is all about the magic of finding new enchantment in the season by experiencing it all through the eyes of a child. It's a melodic diary entry bought to life, with Pixie making this ballad a charming lullaby for her own child's first Yuletide experience. It is one that any parent can relate to - a sweeping tale of love and devotion set to lilting piano chords, Pixie sings the poetic, descriptive lyrics with such reverence that its hard not to envisage the narrative as a vivid Christmas card picture in your mind's eye. There's something so delightfully soothing about it (so perhaps it will help get baby off to sleep?), a tranquil calm away from the busy bluster that can so often happen in the countdown to the big day. Perfect to play when you just need a littl serenity in your life - or, indeed, you want to shut out the cynicism of the world and focus on something joyful and triumphant...

It's not Pixie's only seasonal song this year either! She's teamed up with Shaznay Lewis and Austin Howard on the title track to the movie Christmas Karma. The movie is a fun Bollywood take on the age old but much loved Christmas Carol tale; the song is a pulsing mid-tempo bop with a percussive groove which has a sense of urgency about it. Austin takes much of the vocals, warning of how the good and bad will come back to you (depending on whether you are naughty or nice list). Brassy horns and chiming bells give it an entirely festive feel, whilst Shaznay and Pixie add to the textured layers of the song (particularly in the rousing chorus, which has a particularly sing-along feel to it). There are some fun dualling vocal moments (I don't know the technical term but when different lyrical/melodic riffs are sung at the same time), adding to the fervent feel of the song. One of those numbers that fits well within the context of the movie but is strong enough to stand on its own two feet too. So make sure you are nice list this year to get the good karma...
