17 DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS!!
Stream Divorced for Christmas here (Spotify)
I appreciate lots of things about my love of Christmas music - two key things stand out; firstly, it means I often find out about acts that might otherwise have passed by (and means I can spend the new year immersed in their back catalogue). Secondly, I very much welcome an alternative take on the holiday season - it is a reality for many that love, actually, isn't all around. The Assist tick both those boxes - taking their soaring indie anthems with hip hop inflected beats and dance rhythms, applying them to this future favourite festive oldie. Divorced For Christmas juxtaposes jaunty piano, peppy percussion as zippy as any sleigh ride and vibrant melodies that bring to mind some of the greatest festive songs of our time, and balances them against the brutal honesty of the lyrics. Lead singer Mickey does an excellent job at conveying the follies of the festivities, whilst adding the female perspective through the delightful addition of Rhianna Keane makes sure this isn't a one-sided story. It's the best boozy pub singalong since The Darkness' Christmas (Don't Let The Bells End) - and the witty video will leave you feeling merry and bright, even as you're singing out to the end of the song. Play loud, play often and go tell everyone you've ever met about this gem!
