During this year's X Factor it was pretty hard not to fall in love with the foursome better known as Only The Young. They bought a sparkling effervescent love of all types of pop music to the show and despite their far too early departure they've managed to continue with an infectiously optimistic and positive vibe. This is most perfectly evidenced on their first official post show video release for their festive medley of It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas/All I Want For Christmas Is You. Mikey, Charlie, Betsey and Parisa all bring an effortless magic to the two well known songs which is helped by a video that manages to showcase their fun personalities and witty sense of humour. It starts off as a gently strumming acoustic vibe with Mikey giving an endearing lead vocal (with some deliciously timed backing harmonies from the rest of the band) on It's Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas. Betsey then takes over with a gorgeous smokey soulful tonal quality her voice that gives the rest of the tune a glorious seductive quality before jingle bells shimmy the song into All I Want For Christmas Is You. Parisa takes the first lead on this song with a voice that feels like it was gifted from the pop gods, perfect as much for this type of exuberant celebration of the season as it is for a wicked cool run through of a Charli XCX song. Similarly Charlie has a singing ability that feels like it could mold itself to any sort of style of song - frankly it's a constant delight to discover how these disparate styles of voices come together to make something so brilliantly cohesive and amiable. They shine brighter than the brightest star in this video and it's difficult not to kick up your heels and let the Christmas spirit in wherever you are when you listen to this :) Can't wait for more music from them in 2015...

Let me take you back in time to pre-X Factor days and last Christmas (I gave you my heart) where you'll find a slightly younger looking Only The Young bringing the same level of vibrant exuberance to Santa Claus Is Coming To Town. Everything I've written above applies to this song and the video is just as amazing as the one you are viewing above. If the band want to do a festive EP to go alongside a special edition of their debut album in Christmas 2015 these two songs are pretty bloody excellent start :)
