Ace music quartet Swear and Shake (from Nashville, Tennessee) have taken a quick break from promoting their very good indeed EP Ain't That Loving to deliver unto the world a completely charming festive pair of tunes as part of their excellent Holiday Split Single. Comprising of one original song and one take on an evergreen holiday standard, both are utterly enchanting examples of a band who can bring their own sound to the season whilst losing none of the magic one expects from a new Christmas song. Santa, My First Love is imbued with inventive percussion, a delicious strumming guitar and shimmering chimes that all play with a handclap rhythm alongside the brilliant lyrics that put a whole new spin on the legend of Father Christmas. Thanks to a genuinely stunning vocal that delivers the narrative with an earnest sincerity that is tinged with a melancholic pathos, it's the tale of heartbreak and sorrowful reminiscing. It's a bewitching tale that flows with mellifluous elegance and is a totally captivating experience for the listener. And despite being dicked over a little bit by good ol' Saint Nick, the group are still able to embrace the season as evidenced by the second song Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas. With a country music tinged instrumental that dances around the lyrics and a sweetly delivered vocal, it makes the song feel like there's a joy and optimism within this time of year regardless of your own circumstances. The video accentuates this message while the convivial singalong moments at the end feel like an invitation for everyone to join in and experience the majesty of Christmas, Swear and Shake style. I could not be more smitten :) Here's hoping they visit England in 2015 :)
