Hurrah! Country-pop singer Jessie James Decker has released a new festive single and it is entirely marvelous from start to finish. Called This Christmas, it's a lovely languorous affair that sparkles as brightly as your favourite bauble on your Christmas tree. It's got all the elements in it that make Jessie's music so great, all gussied up in shimmering holiday trimmings to give you a warm cosy glow, as if you were snuggled up by the roaring log fire. The reason I love Jessie James Decker so much (other than that her maiden name means she shares a name with a Cher song) is that her lyrics are so evocative and vivid that they conjure up images from your own memories (or even your own wishes of what might be) in a way that makes the song feel intimate and personal to the listener. This track is a perfect example of that - the song starts with resonant chimes before easing into a sumptuous instrumental, fueled by a percussive groove, guitar riffs and textured backing vocals. The narrative paints an aching picture of how loneliness can be accentuated by the sentiments of the season, and how this turns to longing when you go through the motions of holiday expectations without the one you love by your side. There's an air of melancholy to Jessie's gorgeous vocals, yet she also imbues the song with a sense of hope and optimism - making herself and the listener believe that anything can come true at Christmas time. Plus the pathos of the lyrics just makes the sense of love and family, whoever your family may be, seem that much more resonant and radiant. The chorus is mellifluous manna from heaven - and add in all those jingles and bells, well it's just the cream on your most delicious hot chocolate. I'll definitely be singing this well into New Years...
