8 DAYS TIL CHRISTMAS!!
Buy Hard Candy Christmas here (Amazon UK)
Gasp! It turns out that Hard Candy Christmas isn't an update of the 2008 Madonna album - so no festive re-writes of tracks like Gimme More (Presents) and Four Minutes (til Santa Comes). Sadness. Happiness in that it's a brand new Cyndi Lauper recording of a cherished Dolly Parton track. Huzzah! Cyndi does Dolly? Yes please - this is what happens when you've been a good boy all year long. Because what's not to love about a song that's from the film Best Little Whorehouse in Texas (one of my favourite films) and is all the girls from the brothel singing as they leave one last time. It's a lovely yearning number about all the hard knocks you get in life, but with a glimmer of hope emerges particularly with the line "I won't let sorrow bring me down". Cyndi doesn't change much from the original, but she certainly gives a serene, melancholy vocal that belies years of heartache but doesn't repress that undeniable spirit within that believes love will win through and happiness is just around the corner. It's an incredibly moving performance and a timely reminder that sometimes life is just awful but there are songs like this in the world that feel like an aural hug from someone who understands what you're going through. Now if we could just get Cyndi to do a cover of the original Roxette version of It Must've Been Love (Christmas Day), it would be just heaven.
