I love a song that isn't a Christmas song in the traditional sense, but pays due deference and respect to the heightened state of emotions that swirl in and out of our lives as the big day grows ever nearer. Bring Me Home by Sam Harris is one such song - a lovely, languorous composition that highlights his strengths as a gifted vocal storyteller and shines a spotlight on the heartbreaking lyrics that he sings. Crafted by the talented trio of Charlie Mason, Daniel Volpe and Thomas Lipp (three wise men who have never let me down), it's an emotive tale of how you often don't recognise how strong and powerful a relationship is until you have left it to dwindle and walked away from it. It's all too easy to take things for granted and think that the positive things in your life are all down to you - and Sam sings the realisation of this not being true with a gut wrenching earnestness and yearning sincerity. He's surrounded by a beautifully tinkling piano that feels like icicles forming in the stark winter landscape, while swirling percussion caress like the chilled kiss of a December winter breeze. Don't be fooled into thinking it is all doom and gloom - Sam ably accentuates the hope that is embedded in the lyrics and often comes with this time of year; he infuses the poetic refrain with an optimism that's contagious and makes you believe anything is possible. And when the key change happens right after the middle 8, it's a soaring and satisfying moment that's more triumphant than anything that Santa could place under the tree. Majestic in every sense of the word - and definitely a song that will lull you into new year and beyond. Giving me all THE FEELS from head to mistletoe...
