I've been smitten as a kitten with RuPaul's joyous Slay Belles album ever since I bought it on that other most wonderful night of the year (Hallowe'en). It's been on non-stop repeat ever since then so I'm delighted that in the run up to Santa's birthday the ferocious diva has decided to release a single from said epic opus. If you never imagined RuPaul channelling Barry White, then Nothing For Christmas will come as something of a jaw-dropping surprise. It's got that sensuous r'n'b groove that the big man was so well known for, gospel inflected backing vocals, hammond organ and a vocal from RuPaul that expertly veers between sassy attitude and whimsical melancholy. The message is that if you ain't been a good girl then Santa ain't gonna empty his sack for you. Which is clearly wrong on so many levels yet has me screaming "YAAS" with giddy abandon. I love that RuPaul can still surprise with a deft range of influences that always keeps you guessing. And now there's a herstoric video accompanying the track, that sees the Ghost of Christmas Past take us all on a journey into Ru's early days in NYC - and it's as fascinating and compelling as if it were a bonus DVD feature on Paris Is Burning. It all feels in keeping with the message of Ru - and of the Yuletide season in general... that your past may have got you to wear you are but it's learning from it in the best way that will define your future. Plus if you can't love yourself how in the hell is Santa gonna find your home and deposit electronic goods under your tree?! Now can this performed at Disney's Christmas Day parade as a duet with Diana Ross please?
