Having gifted her vocals to Matt Dusk's stunning new Christmas album, Old School Yule, Canadian singer songwriter, Emma-Lee, is unwrapping her own musical present in the form of sparkling new festive single It Won't Be Christmas. It is an instantly engaging, sparkling gem of a song that will have your fingers clicking, your shoulders shimmying and hips a-swaying before Emma-Lee has even finished the first chorus. It is a lyrical tale of how Christmas can seem lonely and blue without your paramour by your side - but rather than dwelling on the days they are not there, Emma-Lee is focusing all her anticipation on when they are by her side and Christmas can start in earnest. Emma-Lee is a gifted pop singer whose expressive voice imbues the reflective moments with pathos, yet brings an ebullient joy to her sense of hope. She's surrounded by a glorious festive score that is complete with an effusive percussive groove, hand clap beats, jingling bells and chimes and a backing vocal group that are like her own personal Supremes, decked out in tinsel finery to give the song a timeless nature. It all coalesces to craft an instrumental that is merry and bright, one that sends your spirits soaring. Emma-Lee is a skilled narrator of the story enlivening the song with personality and passion as she guides the memorable melody and euphoric refrain to it's exhilarating conclusion. It feels like the type of song you should have had in your repertoire forever, an old friend coming to visit. That's not to say it is generic - rather that it is so immediately inviting that you are singing along at the top of your voice before the first run through has ended. And every year from now, it won't be Christmas until you have started playing this song.
