TEN YEARS OF THE KILLERS CHRISTMAS SINGLES (2006-2015):Rumour has it that the 2016 Christmas single,
I'll Be Home For Christmas, may well be the last festive offering from
The Killers, at least for a while. For eleven years now, we have been gifted with a brand new single each holiday season to cast a different light on the Yuletide season, as well as raise money for the Product:RED charity campaign. They've finally bought all 11 singles together on a compilation album called
Don't Waste Your Wishes, a culmination of their Yuletide creativity all in one place. I've reviewed each and every one over the years (list above) and can confirm that Joel, The Lump of Coal recently overtook Don't Shoot Me Santa Claus as my favourite track they've done. That's not to say that this year's release isn't a heartwarming gem - their first cover version that effortlessly earns it's place alongside the self-penned luminaries. Singer Brandon Flowers opens the song with a narrated story that sets the scene for the music to follow. He's a skilled raconteur who could easily have a second career in the lucrative audio book market, painting a vivid picture of Christmases gone by with his expressive style. It is a little reminiscent of The Wonder Years (or for the kids of today, The Goldbergs). It then launches into guest star Ned Humphrey Hansen singing the evergreen standard - it is initially a cappella, his tremulous voice conjuring up memories of singalongs by the fire with your own family members. Brandon joins in with elegant harmony, with an organic and mesmerising instrumental wrapping their vocals in seasonal magic. There is an aura of melancholy to the singing that matches the poignancy of the lyrics. A fitting end to their legacy of annual seasonal majesty. Just don't waste your wishes on a new track in 2017 :(
