Last year, Ingrid Michaelson's Songs of The Season was one of my favourite festive albums of the year. And as every Christmas music aficionado knows, a Christmas album is for life - not just for the year it was released. So while that album continues to provide a glorious soundtrack to the most wonderful time of the year, I'm delighted that Ms Michaelson has added not one but two new songs to her Christmas music canon; Christmas Lights (which appeared on her Stranger Songs album all the way back in June) and now Christmas Valentine. She's bought the rather lovely Jason Mraz along for this enchanting new gem and the results are as heartwarming as any Hallmark Christmas movie. Set to a gently strumming guitar with gorgeous cooing backing vocals, the song is about how finding the right person can make every day feel like a holiday. Both Ingrid and Jason give dreamy vocal performances that are saturated in the lilting fairytale they sing of; imbuing each word with a sense of giddy glee that is utterly contagious for the listener. It feels like you've always known this song - not that it is derivative, just that it is so charming that it wins you over from the first note through to the "very merry February" refrain. Glorious accoutrements such as the elegantly dancing piano and the shimmering jingle bells enhance the magical nature of the song; that last layered chorus is so genuinely uplifting that you are left floating as high as the brightest star in the firmament. Fair to say I'm entirely smitten.
