One of the greatest gifts of being besotted with all things Christmas is that Christmas music can often direct me to acts I wasn't necessarily aware of prior to their seasonal song. The latest present I've unwrapped is the discography of Cold Weather Company, a New Jersey indie-pop band with a rich history of meaningful lyrics, catchy hooks and lasting melodies. The ability to compose a lasting song is best demonstrated through their rather lovely new festive single, Warmth In Winter. It is a beautifully crafted work of living art which focuses on the memories we create year after year with those we love; and how we look back at those experiences even as we build new ones. The song opens with a guitar solo as vibrant as a crackling fire before jingling bells shuffle in and an elegant, inviting piano accompaniment takes centre stage. All of these are glimmering magic on their own but I think it is the unexpected addition of the violin which really gives the music a shimmering glow. It is sung with such charm that the lads affection for the narrative shines through and is utterly contagious. Adding in an ever growing choir of their friends for that uplifting hook makes this a convivial offering from their family to yours - whoever and wherever that may be. This entirely glorious, euphoric masterpiece may be what the words "enchanting whimsy" were made for. A new future classic has been born. Nurture it well.
