Kacey Musgraves - The Kacey Musgraves Christmas Show

Buy The Kacey Musgraves Christmas Show here (Amazon GB)

Well, I do love a gift that is a big surprise. Imagine my joy when, scrolling through new content on Amazon Prime here in England, I found the full performance of The Kacey Musgraves Christmas Show tv special resplendent and present for all British folk to indulge in. I do love when international restrictions are lifted. Kacey's A Very Kacey Christmas album from 2016 has become a perennial favourite of mind so I am particularly delighted that she is revisiting the most wonderful time of the year - and bringing new music along with her. Of course she performed favourites from her holiday album, but there is enough sparkling previously unheard performances (now preserved for your listening pleasure on CD and streaming) to make this feel like - well, if not a second Christmas album - at the very least a solid and spectacular new festive EP. Here are the all new highlights...
  • Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas ~ after opening the show with the opening track from A Very Kacey Christmas (Let It Snow x 3), Kacey brings Hollywood Regal Eleganza to the Meet Me In St Louis classic. She brings a little lilting island rhythm to the music, adds a little pep to the pace and it is a vibrant new setting for the sincerity and hope of the timeless lyrics. When a choir joins in, it is like a rallying cry that makes the magic of the words come to life.
  • Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree ~ ooo, look. Popstars are just like you and me. People pop round for a cuppa and a sing a long all the time. This time it is Camila Cabello who adds a little soul to the charm of Kacey's ebullient singing style. The two ladies intertwine their voices well to give this some nice blended harmonies. There is a little sass and glee in the instrumental which makes you just want to kick up your heels and party.
  • Glittery ~ following on from some more Very Kacey Christmas tracks, the first brand new Kacey composition is a rather glorious duet with Troye Sivian. It is a lilting, languorous duet set to an enchanting acoustic guitar with dreamy lyrics about the wonder of spending the season with someone you love. Both Kacey and Troye sing of their passions with a graceful elegance; their solo moments being splendid but it is the sparkling duet in the chorus which well make your heart melt like whipped cream dissolving into hot chocolate. The fragility and romance of the final "I love the way you decorate my heart" will linger long after the music finishes playing.
  • I'll Be Home For Christmas ~ there is something rather sad and melancholy about this seasonal evergreen. The hopeful but possibly hopeless promise of the lyrics is sung with aching beauty by both Kacey and another friend popping by, Lana Del Rey. Even the gentle guitar lends to the poignant sense of yearning that is so prevalent in both ladies voices. It is a mesmerising moment that shows a song can have lasting impact through subtlety and nuance rather than belting it out to the rafters. Smitten.
