Malte Ebert - Christmas Without You

3 DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS!!

Buy Christmas Without You here (Amazon GB)

I'm a little late in discovering this song (as, like all good Christmas songs, it came out in early November) but it is better to belatedly find Malte Ebert's Christmas Without You and spend the season with it (rather than without it) on your holiday playlist. As you may have guessed from the title of the song, this is about the loneliness one can experience at a time of year when being with someone seems all the more pronounced and essential - it is in movies, in songs, in Christmas adverts playing on your television screen. Being apart from those special to you can bring a sharper sense of isolation - and Malte is here to exquisitely craft that into an achingly beautiful slice of music that will convey your feelings far more eloquently and melodically than you could hope to do. His yearning lyrics are set to elegiac guitar, an instrument that caresses his voice with each emotive word sung. As the song continues, a shuffling percussion and graceful violin accompaniment texture the instrumental - as if Malte's declaration is bringing together like minded folk together; singing if not to make the situation better then at least to make it less painful and solitary. It all blends together with an elegant sadness - and there is something rather charming about how from the sorrow can come such an enchanting tune. Do check out the snowy live performance of the song here (YouTube) for a full sensory experience...
