One of the benefits of being so smitten with new Christmas music is that it helps me discover artists who otherwise might have passed me by. One such singer-songwriter is Hannah Grace, whose elegiac take on Shakin' Stevens' Merry Christmas Everyone, is drenched in such haunting beauty that it is as if the world stops, just for a moment, while she soothes you with her voice. You may well know the original as a perky, finger-clicking classic holiday bop but Hannah has interpreted the song in a way that seems to reflect what a difficult year 2020 has been. Set to just a lovely piano accompaniment and slowed down to be more of a reflective ballad, Hannah's voice shines forth like the brightest star in the skies. Her expressive tones not only make the words feel like they were always meant for her, but tell a hundred unspoken stories of hopeful wish fulfilment and optimism for a better tomorrow. As the song fades with her sincere wish of the titular refrain, it is possibly the most earnest statement of intent since Judy Garland sang Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas all those decades ago (and just as timeless).
