33 DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS!!

If I compare a new seasonal song to both the opening verse of The Pogue's Fairytale of New York and Take That's Babe you should take it as a compliment of the highest order. The former may cause controversy, but the extended opening (and middle 8) paint a stark picture tinged with melancholy and reality. Meanwhile Babe is Take That at their story telling finest - it is exactly that song writing skill and exquisite production that is utilised for DSM's latest single. The Snowfall of December features the vocal talents of Ben Davidson and it may be his finest four minutes of singing to date. The song has a country music influence to it - beginning as a shimmering piano-vocal duet. Intimate lyrics are delivered with a sense of longing and regret, emotions so tangible in Ben's voice you feel you can reach out and touch them. The chorus adds texture with elegiac guitar and gentle percussion, as if encouraging Ben to sing through the memories to find some consolation. It is beautifully put together; producer Dan Scholes (DSM) has always had a knack for drawing the best out of his collaborators and this is no exception. Ben is a great lyrical diarist, tender and introspective when he needs to be yet fuelled by the burning experiences of the past when the song demands it (that note at around the 3 minute mark is a triumph). A fine, fine winter ballad that can be played all year long whenever you just want to hear accomplished pop music.
