Admittedly, this is a 60 days of the year Christmas music blog so everything around here is a little bit fairy lights and silent night. The great thing about good old festive tunes, however, is that they know no genre and quite often songs are reinvented by folk far more talented than I and given a new lease of life. As much as I love Mariah Carey warbling away about what she wants for Christmas, sometimes you just want a rollicking good romp that is the musical equivalent of two pints down the boozer on Christmas Eve. That is exactly the sort of invigorating knees up the Vistas give you with their exhilarating take on Shakin' Stevens' Merry Christmas Everyone. Thanks to the frisson of energetic anticipation from the electrifying guitar and the peppy sleigh ride pace of the accompanying percussion, the instrumental is a kick-up-your-heels, feel good knees up that reminds of every drunken celebration you've been to over the holidays. That engaging vocal performance has not a jot of cynicism in it but is the warm glow of Yuletide cheer we all need to embrace after this godawful year. The chant-along nature of the last chorus is basically a big ol' hug from your mates. Indulge it - it's bloody brilliant.
