Read my review of A Ben Rector Christmas here
Last year, Ben Rector introduced us to what A Ben Rector Christmas might be like - and it was quite the gracious invite to the most charming event. Across 1 Thanksgiving anthem and 6 Christmas songs, we were immersed into a finger clicking world of sprightly magic and heart felt emotion. He's returned to the most wonderful time of the year with tw brand new single for 2021 - a swaggering, cool AF remake of Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer. It is fun and funky, a convivial effort with call and response chants that make it a treat to sing along to; meanwhile the bass and percussion give the song some real attitude. The whole three minutes is a hoot - the "go rudolph" addition makes this a new party anthem for the 2021 holiday season (and, I suspect, many seasons beyond that). Watch the video at the buy-stream link above - you can tell Ben and his band of merry makers were having such a good time making it; that magic is baked right into the recording and is a contagious sentiment flowing from each note every time you play it. Which I recommend you do loud and often!
Fast forward until December 31st and Ben has also gifted us with the perfect song to reflect upon the year which has just faded away whilst looking forward to that which is ahead of us. The Best Is Yet To Come is a charming ballad that grows in swagger and hope as the music powers forward. Powerful piano creates an inviting atmosphere which Ben's warm, expressive vocal tones really excel in - perfectly demonstrating that whilst bringing the fun (as with Rudolph) he can also share the feeling that comes from reminiscing and sharing hopes for a brighter tomorrow. The score pulses and flows, at one with the emotion of the song and Ben is your most gifted raconteur, sharing his story of optimism and that unwavering faith that we can always find a glimmer of hope in the darkest of times. Truly a lovely musical motif and one that you should play whenever you need a pick me up (regardless of what time of year it is)!
