Last Christmas I gave my heart to DJ Debbie G who delighted us with a Sweet Christmas treat of a song; this year, Debbie Gibson is back, feeling festive and ready to sleigh (spelling intentional!) with a brand new, original holiday song called Christmas Star. And what a year it has been for Ms Gibson - she released her tenth album, The Body Remembers, to rave reviews, had her first (of many, hopefully) Vegas residency and still has time to get into the spirit of the season with this joyous bop. The lyrics are designed to help you rise up out of the blue Christmas funk you may be in and start living for the magic of the most wonderful time of the year. Debbie is in fine festive vocal fettle, imbuing her voice with a giddy sense of glee and merriment that effervesces with such radiance that it makes the feel good factor entirely contagious. She's accompanied by peppy percussion, jingling bells and decadent chimes that all add to this celebratory song. Lyrics like "live life like you're in a Hallmark town" fill you glad tidings of great joy while that chorus just makes you want to kick up your heels and sparkle. That's the thing about Christmas music - it can lift your mood in the present whilst transporting you back to some of your favourite memories. Let's hope a new holiday song becomes an annual tradition because, Debbie Gibson, it won't be Christmas Without You.
The video:
Have you ever watched Love, Actually (a.k.a. the greatest Christmas movie, however unfeasible, that was ever created)? There is a scene where Emma Thompson is discussing how her brother (Prime Minister played by Hugh Grant) went toe to toe with the US president while all she did was make a papier mache lobster head. That's how I feel watching the gloriously euphoric video for this song - "I unpacked a box of Christmas sweaters while Debbie Gibson was creating iconic giffable moments by hula-hooping a wreath of Christmas baubles on one arm". Amazing! Here are ten other moments to adore from this clip:
- Everybody's dogs should feature in a Christmas video because a dog is for life, but is so much fun at Christmas (#DogsAllowed). Pupstar Joey frolics with his siblings whilst Debbie gives movie star realness sat a-top a piano like a fairy a-top the tree. Like the musical White Christmas points out - I love a piano...
- Debbie dances in The Body Remembers green in front a giant star lighting effect, giving some of that deep shoulder shimmy that the song so inspires. If this was a TV show, it would be Say Yes To The Dress because that slinky little number is giving curves and swerves for days. Suddenly my abercrombie & fitch chinos seem really boring.
- The head toss at "little boy blue" is a treat. Who doesn't love a bit of hairography in front of the most ornate and deliciously decorated tree? Seriously, is there a service where someone can come and decorate mine? Debbie's Decorating Cameo maybe? My tree looks like the Grinch threw up on it (but it sure is twinkly)...
- I have never used my shoes as a make shift microphone before but thanks to Debbie utilising her Cinderella type slipper, I suddenly want nothing more than to try this. See, pop stars are just like us, grabbing whatever is at hand for a mic. Unrelated but while we're talking about Cinderella - ML2 track, Some People, is an undiscovered gem isn't it?!
- I'm all for an Out Of The Blue (Christmas) reference. So many of Debbie's songs could be re-worked as Christmas classics. Sleighing Together? Lost In Mince Pies?? Elves Night Out?! Another Gift Falls?! The (anything is) possibilities are endless. I mean, what part of snow don't you understand?!
- I'm obsessed with that bauble wreath. After the video premiere, I went onto Amazon and typed in bauble wreath and got one in a (very early) Black Friday deal. I won't be chucking it up in the air in such a cavalier, devil-may-care fashion as Deb does as it was £64.99 but if there is a little too much bourbon in the egg-nog I can't rule out doing the hula hoop moment.
- Not to harp on too much about fashion, but that white dress is very Carrie-Sex-In-The-City and suddenly I have a real hankering for a Debbie Gibson Christmas Movie musical (and accompanying album) on Hallmark/Netflix/BBC next holiday season. I'm putting this wish out into the universe right now...
- 2m25s - tall drink of water, Nick Spanos is in the house, getting approval on his photo shoot images from The Boss. When I win the lottery, sponsor a Debbie Gibson UK Pride tour, fund that Hallmark/Netflix/BBC Debbie Gibson Christmas movie and (of course) pay off my mortgage, with the remaining money I'm going to pay Nick to get at least one shot of me where I don't look increasingly like my Aunt Mildred.
- JT and the Bear sounds like a TV sitcom that might air on World of Wonder, but instead Deb's trusted assistant is on build-a-bear duties and hauling the (seemingly) six foot cuddly toy around. If Toy Story is real, it is pretty much assured that bear is Emperor of the Toy Cupboard (or at least whispering to JT, take me home for Christmas)!
- A final treat of a new costume change, vinyl records, air guitar and a rollicking good time. Debbie doesn't need to wrap herself up in the clothes that she wore when she was with Daniel (whatever happened to him?!) when she has this many wardrobe changes. This video definitely puts Debbie firmly in the Nice List this year!
