Luke McMaster really is the Christmas gift that keeps on giving. This is the third year in a row I've been able to review new seasonal songs from him on this very date and, beyond Christmas Present and My Favourite Time of Year, he has a rich tapestry of previous holiday music releases for you to dive into. This year, fresh from his utterly gorgeous EP, Time (stream here - external link) he's stripped Wham's Last Christmas back to its architectural blueprints and rebuilt it in his own, smooth soulful style. He gives the song a slower pace which enables the listener to appreciate the impact of the acoustic setting he finds himself in. Lilting guitar is gently buoyed by a subtle, shuffling beat and both work together to feel like the stark winter landscape that seems to be more noticeable alongside all the trimmings when you are experiencing heartache. Luke's voice has always been an expressive treat - he's a gifted raconteur and here, his wistful, reflective musings are drenched in sadness. There's such beauty to the music, however, that it doesn't feel gloomy. Rather, it is a cathartic release of emotions that will hopefully lead to a happier Christmas ahead. Just gorgeous.
