I'm (mistle)totally ready to embrace more Christmas Acoustic magic from Mateo Oxley. I discovered him last year (via Daniel Boys instagram story, no less) and fell hard for his stripped back, honest renditions of festive songs (both well known and obscure). Judging by his 2021 Spotify wrap up, a lot more people than I became smitten with his seasonal and pop acoustic covers. There is such a warm, engaging quality to Mateo's vocal whilst the instrumental guitar swathes said voice in organic, yet lush melodies that add extra nuance and insight to the stories he tells. I'm therefore delighted that, in a follow up to last year's four delectable offerings, Mateo has unwrapped two new acoustic holiday songs for your listening pleasure...
  • River ~ the Joni Mitchell standard has always been a gorgeous if elegiac tale of heartbreak and regret. In the hands of Mr Oxley, it is a soulful outpouring of sorrowful emotions that feel like they are being sung not because they will make it all better but because it is too painful to keep inside. There is a gentle smattering of bells and hushed layered vocals that add to the exquisite melancholy. It is utterly mesmerising and the luminous grace of the song shines like the brightest star in the firmament. Calms the crazy of the world outside, if just for the time you are captivated by this performance.
  • Christmas Always Finds Me ~ the perfect choice for the holiday season of this year; this little known but very deserving of attention Ingrid Andress song is a charming ode about how life can get you down and the school of hard knocks can make you jaded, but there is something about the most wonderful time of the year that helps lift your spirits again. That soothing guitar & choral style backing vocals work in symbiotic harmony with Mateo's earnest, sincere singing. He injects the relevant words with just the amount of reflective poignancy whilst seamlessly flowing to conveying a comforting sense of awe about the magic of the holidays. Lovely
