Every Christmas season needs a song that feels perfect for a boozy, knees up, sing-along in the pub (when we are allowed to do such frivolities). In years gone by, The Killers used to be splendid at delivering annual festive anthems but in more recent times it has fallen to the likes of Scouting For Girls and, of course, The Lumineers. They've teamed up with rather brilliant singer-songwriter, Daniel Rodriguez, to turn his song This Is Life into a stomping, convivial holiday romp (hence the Merry Christmas in parenthesis) - one that blends the styles of two artistries with symbiotic ease. With lyrics all about encouraging that negative Nelly in your life to buck up a bit and realise it is just the cards we are all sometimes dealt (just with a hearty Merry Christmas cheer after each titular refrain). It is all performed with an engaging vocals, spicy horn blasts and jingle-jangling percussion that wrap around you like paper round a present. The type of song that deserves to Mariah its way up the UK Christmas countdown every year from now until the end of days (plus proceeds benefits MusiCares so its win-win for everyone)!
