Kelli-Leigh - Unwrap My Heart


5 WEEKS UNTIL CHRISTMAS!!

I do enjoy the sounds of splendiferous singer, Kelli-Leigh. She has the type of voice that commands your attention and a singing style that beautifully enhances a song's narrative and emotion. I also admire that she has forged her own path in an industry that isn't always kind to people of colour. Her success is self-made and a joy to behold. Following on from last year's brilliant seasonal single, Underneath The Tree, she is back with a festive four track E.P. Unwrap My Heart explores the different facets of the holidays and drapes them in contemporary pop scores that have just the right amount of magic and sparkle... 

The title track, Unwrap My Heart, is all about the longing for love (actually) because the songs teach us that winter wonderlands aren't made for one. Chiming bells and a finger click groove dance alongside lush piano chords. Kelli-leigh sings with a balance of hope and wistful longing. It has a hook as addictive as the most delicious mince pie and just as moreish. The wishing continues in Underneath The Tree; with a bass line that slaps hard and jingling bells which add holiday enchantment this year old song is fast on its way to becoming your favourite future oldie. Kelli-leigh is the heartfelt anchor of the song, shining in that opulent instrumental & decadent backing vocals. 

Merry trapmas! Look, I'm not really qualified to judge what trap is but Kelli-leigh's take on The Christmas Song feels like it is infused with influences from the genre. I particularly like the juxtaposition of the deep, resonant beat against an elegant yet playful piano. And Kelli-leigh sounds like she is genuinely having a joyful time singing this evergreen. When you've recovered from her high notes, you get to celebrate This Time Of Year - the E.P's final song. Descriptive lyrics paint a vivid picture of cosy Christmas moments that are bought alive by Kelli-leigh's gorgeous voice. It is a triumphant finale, one that leaves you feeling merry and bright. Now go tell everyone you've met about it...
