One of my favourite things about writing this Christmas Countdown of new holiday music each year is checking whether those artists I wrote about on a particular day in previous years have new product out. Ryland James continues to deliver a new festive gem each year, building a solid, enchanting collection of songs. These provide memories of Christmas past whilst also adding new sounds to experiences of Christmas present each year. This year he has covered Joni Mitchell's elegiac standard, River, in such exquisitely tender style that it feels like it was always intended for him to sing. He adds a sparse beat to the sumptuous piano melody, whilst sorrowful bells chime in the background. It is the nuance and emotion in his voice that really helps it stand out; you get the impression he sings not because he thinks it will make it better but because it is too painful not to sing through it. Lovely - we all need A Little Christmas and this (like Christmas To Remember) is a great addition to that EP. Here's hoping for more annual Yuletide fare.
