Matt Dusk - Last Christmas

32 DAYS UNTIL CHRISTMAS!!

This is the tenth Christmas I get to spend with Matt Dusk's Old School Yule - and I love how, particularly during the 2020s, he's always eager to return to the most wonderful time of the year to add more musical magic for your seasonal songlist. Take a scroll down to the Ghosts of Christmas Past to see the Christmassy crooner's more recent additions, then focus on his dazzling swing version of the Wham classic, Last Christmas. It is a lovely, slowed down version where you get the sense Matt is savouring every word of singing such an indelible festive standard. Elegant yet elegiac piano dances like the lights sparkling on the tree, whilst subtle strings shimmer in like the first snow of winter. Extended instrumental moments let the heartache of the song flow, yet it's Matt's nuanced voice that anchors the song and is its beating heart. It's achingly haunting, like a dream come to life - and one that you'll remember long after the song has finished playing...

Now, not a Christmas single, but one that would have made a very essential double A side to Last Christmas here in the UK, is Matt's interpretation of those K-Pop Demon Hunter's ubiquitous song Golden. His swingalicious version had a viral moment this year and it is easy to see why. Matt has this innate gift for translating contemporary music through the lens of the likes of Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra, turning chart topping hits of the 2020s into finger clicking jazz grooves that sound like they were always meant to be sung by the Rat Pack. It's saturated in horn blasts, funky bass and a peppy percussion. Matt doesn't skip a note with his ebullient performance, a dapper raconteur breathing new life into the music that sparkles like the brightest star in the sky. No, it's not festive but it does make you feel joyful and triumphant, so get dressed up, grab the one you love and shimmy hard to this at the office party this year (and every year til the end of days)!
