I didn't have The Divine Comedy down as crafting one of the most lovely Christmas songs of the season (that can be played all year round), but their track All The Pretty Lights (from very good indeed album Rainy Sunday Afternoon) is an essential addition to your holiday playlist. As with all the songs on the album, this is representative of singer-songwriter Neil Hannon's most personal and poignant work to date with lush orchestration and an engaging vocal. He tells a tale of Christmas lights and sparkling magic through the eyes of a child, tinged with the bittersweet reflection of the passages of time (and how they make you more cynical and resigned to the vagueries of life). The music is a lush, layered landscape of shimmering percussion and Salvation Army Christmas band-esque brass that gives this both a timely and timeless aura. There are playful guitar moments that capture the childlike joy of the lyrics, whilst a delightful 50s style animation video is just the icing on this very delicious cake. Beautiful nostalgia wrapped in a very Divine Comedy Christmas bow.
