Todd Almond & Kate Douglas - Who Will You Kiss On New Year's (From Miss Pennington County: A Musical)

1 WEEK UNTIL CHRISTMAS!!

Stream / Buy Who Will You Kiss On New Year's here (on Bandcamp)

I fell for Todd Almond's music a few years ago via his very lovely indeed A Pony For Christmas album. I'm not sure whether he ever got/received said equestrian animal, but he's certainly gifted a gem this year - a new holiday themed track on the concept album for Miss Pennington County: A Musical. The entire project is a collaboration between him and gifted singer/songwrter Kate Douglas, a show about two people whose lives change when they meet at a dance in 1959. All the songs on the album help unravel the story of their time together, but it is Who Will You Kiss On New Year's that aligns closely to this Christmas themed website (and a song/album I found when I looked through my Ghosts of Christmas Past section at the footer of this review to see what Todd was up to)! Sung by Colton Ryan, it already feels like a glorious, swooning 50s style pop smash, complete with a lavish instrumental, textured harmonies and a fervent, hopeful and romantic vocal from Colton. He imbues the song with a sense of dreamy intent, crafting a picture perfect scene of the first throes of love. He makes it feel like he' a teen idol, traversing the passages of time - and those "who do you kiss" moments in the song, lined up with the backing vocalists, feels like the whole world is holding its breath, waiting for an answer. Magic.
