I was actually out west last week and on the flight over did listen to Jef Joslin's very good indeed album Come Out West. It was like a musical invitation as the plane landed at LAX and the bright lights of Disney beckoned (amidst those dreadful storms and mudslides. Good times). As I embraced the festive season I was hoping that the talented Mr Joslin would grace his fans with a Christmas song and he did not disappoint me. He didn't just choose a Christmas song, he chose The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire) and performs it with a consumate elegance and organic passion that sums up his entire musical style. With just his guitar he delivers a gently strummed instrumental that combines a delicate percussive beat engineered just by his hand (like a human metronome!) Jef sings with an earnest conviction that helps convey the sincere sentiments of the lyrics and excels in an acoustic setting. The earthy tonal quality to his voice gives the sweeter than sweet nature of the song a little edge though Jef wisely loses none of the magic that it requires. He's compelling to watch too - giving you an idea of what an acoustic concert with the fella himself would be like. It's a charming interpretation of an incredibly well known standard that manages to be infused with some Jef Joslin sound, conjuring up once more those west coast vibes. Aces. Now get yourself a Christmas present and buy that Come Out West album :)
